Using the default Gnome GUI to change an ip address in RHEL 5

You can search this site for my guide on installing RHEL5, this document is a continuation of a new VMWare RHEL 5 install.

    Click edit

    Close and save the system-config-network

Because the Linux server has started up using DHCP, there has been an ip address assigned. We now need to restart networking to allow our static ip address to come into effect.

Open a new terminal by right-mouse clicking on the RHEL linux desktop

Now the new id-address should have taken effect, type ifconfig as root on the above terminal to ensure the the NIC has now got the new ip assigned.

You should now be able to use puTTY via SSH.
