How to enable remote debugging for a WebSphere Web application using RAD 7.0

Step 1:

To be able to debug an Enterprise Application you must enable the Debugging service for WebSphere Application server.

The sample application we will use in the demo is the Web based LogViewer EAR file. You can down load the source from here

Ensure you set up an appropriate port that the development client is able to access. May requires SSH tunnel?

    Restart JVM i.e. Application Server.

    Step 2:

Using RAD 7.0 (IBM Rapid Application Developer)

    Switch to Debug Perspective

    Create new Debug configuration

Set-up remote debug details using appropriate port as set in the Application server's Debugging service.

Note: If you get this dialog, it is because the server is not started or you have a firewall issue or incorrect connection details.

    Set a break point

    Step 3:

    Run application on server

    Break point is reached

You can now step through your code running on the server. Break points must be used to be able to trap the application at key code locations.

Tip: If you install Rational Agent Controller you can start and stop application servers from within server profiles inside RAD, just like you can with local runtimes.
